Disposable pod systems by far are the easiest to use. Simply pick one up and you can start vaping away until the battery or juice finishes. Once empty you can dispose of it, hence the name. No maintenance, thus hassle-free!
Closed pod systems on the other hand are the in-between. The cartridges come prefilled with juices so the only maintenance here is swapping the cartridges out once the liquid inside is finished and charging the device. But other than that, you’re good to go!
Open pod systems have the most maintenance and a slight learning curve compared to the rest. The cartridges are typically divided into 2 - 3 sections which may include the mouthpiece, the empty cartridge itself and the coil while some have their cartridges as one whole piece. The maintenance comes in when you have to refill your cartridge with juice, or more commonly known as pod, or replace the coil once it’s burnt and give the empty cartridge a wash before putting in a new coil. These devices also require recharging. It can be troublesome for some but the benefits do outweigh the detriments.
Both disposable and closed pod systems are definitely much easier to use and maintain and work really well for beginners, but the downside of it is your juice selection in both flavour and nicotine strength is limited to what the manufacturer makes.
If you prefer unrestricted access to any juice on the market then open pod systems are the better option. This affords you the choice of the exact flavour and nicotine strength you desire. Open pod systems often have a range of coils with larger wicking areas which provides better juice absorption for high VG juices and higher wattage settings allow you to maximise the flavours of freebase nicotine juices!
Just like DIY, it’s much cheaper to do it yourself. Same goes with pod systems! Open pod systems in the long run will save you more money as you only have to top up on your juices and coils.
Closed and disposable pod systems can get a bit pricey in the long run but it’s great when you’re just starting to vape. Paying as little as RM15 for a disposable pod system to try out vaping is much better than paying for a full setup of an open pod system with a bottle of juice which will set you back at least by RM100.
As with normal vape devices, some open pod systems allow you to adjust your wattage settings! This can be incredibly useful if you’re switching between freebase and salt nicotine juices or want that extra control over warmth or cloud production.
Closed pods and disposable pods however, are set to a specific wattage based on the manufacturer. Keep in mind some open pod systems also have fixed wattages but this also makes it much easier as you don’t have to worry about the settings hence making them hassle-free!

Disposable coils definitely win this category. Having the coils pre-made for you and swapping the coils in and out of the tank is super convenient.
Rebuildable coils however, take a little bit of practice to get the best out of it. It also can be time consuming to learn and build it yourself although with the right tool and your preferred wires and cotton, it will bring your vaping experience to a whole other level!
Building your own coils gives you the utmost control over your setup. By getting your hands down and dirty, you can be as precise as you want with your resistance, with your coil wraps as well as wicking your cotton. You also have endless building possibilities with all the different wire and cotton in the market.
Disposable coils on the other hand, you’re limited with what the manufacturer produces. Same goes to your wattage depending on the resistance of your coil.
A pack of disposable coils would set you back roughly RM40 ~ RM50. On average, it’ll probably last you up to 2 weeks or more than a month. Not too bad right? There are many popular disposable coils that have been in the market for many years but you still might run into the risk of finding replacement coils as newer tanks and pods gain popularity.
On the other hand, one pack of cotton and wire easily lasts you months! And they’re really cheap in the long run as a pack of each would be around RM50. Wire and cotton are also much more easily available so you won’t be running out of it anytime soon.
Disposable coils are most commonly used in tanks and especially in pod systems such as the Fantasy Holy Grail by Vika or the Caliburn G by Uwell.
Rebuildable coils can also be used in pods that have rebuildable decks but are the bread and butter when it comes to rebuildable drippers, tanks and dripping tank atomizers. They’re also commonly abbreviated as RDA, RTA, and RDTA.

Nowadays you have two choices; freebase nicotine or nicotine salts. And no, the ‘salts’ doesn’t stand for table salt. Your juice won’t taste salty, we swear! Choosing the right one can level up your entire vaping experience.
So what’s the difference anyway? Here’s a quick look at what makes them the complete opposite of each other.
Differences | Freebase Nicotine | Nicotine Salts |
---|---|---|
Throat Hit | Strong | Smooth |
Nicotine Strength | Low | High |
Head Buzz | Slow | Fast |
Ideal Wattage | Low & High | Low |
Flavours | Complex | Simple |
Throat hit is the feeling it gives you on the back of the throat as you inhale.
Freebase nicotine has a lower acidity level which makes it much harsher when inhaled. Nicotine salts on the other hand will have a more mellow throat hit with its higher acidity level. So if you are looking for something smooth that won’t make you cough every time you vape, bolehlah try nicotine salts.
Nicotine salts typically start from 25mg and can go all the way up to 50mg, which makes it ideal to get your fix. Freebase nicotine however, comes in a much lower concentration typically ranging from 0mg (no nicotine) to 18mg. With a wider variety of lower nicotine levels, freebase nicotine makes it much easier to taper off your nicotine intake!
Generally if you were to smoke half a pack of Marlboro Lights cigarettes in a day, a 6mg freebase nicotine juice would do you just fine. If you’d prefer the nicotine salt option, the 30mg juices would work well too! But if you’re still unsure, go ahead and click that little bubble on the bottom right and we’ll help you out!
Nicotine salts will do the job just right. With the high concentration of nicotine and the fast absorption into your bloodstream, the head buzz you’ll get feels very similar to having your first puff of cigarette in the morning.
Freebase nicotine is much more delicate. It doesn’t hit you as hard but because of it, you’re able to vape more frequently and enjoy the flavours much more.
This can really depend on the setup you’re using and your own personal preferences. But as a rule of thumb, nicotine salts would be best used with lower wattages as having too much nicotine in one go can be quite uncomfortable.
It’s counterpart however, can be vaped at low or high wattages! If you don’t like your vape to be too warm, have your setup on a lower wattage and if you want to have huge plumes of clouds instead, go ahead and set it higher! It all comes down to what you enjoy.
This is definitely one of the most important factors when it comes to vaping!
Nicotine salts have straightforward and simple flavour profiles due to being typically used with lower powered setups. This makes it slightly harder to bring out the subtlety in complex flavour profiles. Freebase nicotine would be the best option if you’re all about the flavours.
